Why You Should Visit
The Legend of the "Blue Mountain"
Phnom Khiev gets its name from the distinctive blue haze that shrouds its peak in the early mornings—an optical effect created by the dense, old-growth jungle interacting with the sunlight. Pailin was historically known as the "City of Gems," and locals often joke that if you look closely enough in the stream, you might still find a tiny ruby.
The O'Tavao Waterfall Connection
The main draw here is the waterfall system (also known locally as O'Tavao Waterfall). While it isn't the tallest waterfall in Cambodia, its charm lies in the clear, cool water flowing down from the Cardamom range. The area has been developed into a community eco-resort, featuring bamboo huts where you can relax by the water's edge.
Top Things to Do
This is not a place for extreme sports, but for extreme relaxation. Here is how to spend your day:
Jungle Swimming
The natural cascading pools are refreshing and generally safe for swimming, making it the perfect escape from the humid tropical heat.
Picnic by the Stream
Rent a bamboo hut (approx. $3-$5) and order a roasted chicken or fresh papaya salad from local community vendors.
Fruit Tasting
Pailin is famous for its fruit orchards. On the drive there, stop at roadside stalls to buy longan, rambutan, or the famous Pailin avocado.
Planning Your Visit
Getting There
The journey is part of the adventure. From Pailin town, the road is paved for the first section but turns into a characteristic "Red Earth" road as you approach the mountain. A motorbike is the best way to travel, allowing you to stop and admire the views. If driving, an SUV is recommended during the rainy season.
Costs and Fees
There is currently no official entrance ticket. However, support the local economy by paying the small parking fee and purchasing food from the community vendors. Be aware that prices might be slightly higher on major holidays like Khmer New Year or Pchum Ben.
Exploring the Cardamoms?
Phnom Khiev is the gateway to the Cardamom Mountains. If you love nature, consider extending your trip to visit the nearby Phnom Yat pagoda in Pailin town to watch the sunset over the valley.
