Chong Kneas: An Honest Guide
Closest to Siem Reap (15km)
$20+ per person (Expensive)
Commercial Port / Floating Village
Chong Kneas is the most famous floating village on the Tonle Sap lake, mostly because it is the closest to Siem Reap. While the sunset views are undeniable, this village has developed a reputation as a "tourist trap." Here is everything you need to know before you book a ticket.
⚠️ The "Rice Scam" Warning
If you visit Chong Kneas, you need to be aware of a very common scam. Your boat driver may take you to a local school or orphanage. They will pressure you to buy a $50 bag of rice to "help the hungry children."
The Reality: The rice is rarely given to the children. After you leave, the school returns the bag to the shop, and they split the profits. If you want to donate, do it through a reputable NGO in town, not on the boat.
What You Will See
- Floating Houses: Unlike the stilted houses of Kampong Phluk, the houses here truly float on bamboo rafts and barrels. They move location depending on the water level.
- The Crocodile Farm: Almost every tour stops at a floating souvenir shop that has a pit of crocodiles. It is a bit of a tourist gimmick, but the view from the roof deck is nice.
- Vietnamese Community: This village is home to many ethnic Vietnamese families who have lived on the water for generations.
The Verdict: Should You Go?
Go to Chong Kneas if: You are very short on time (it's only a 30-minute drive) and just want a quick sunset boat ride.
Go to Kampong Khleang instead if: You want a genuine, authentic experience. It is further away (1 hour), but the community is friendlier, the prices are fair, and it feels like a real village, not a theme park.
