Home to the world's largest collection of Khmer art, the National Museum of Cambodia is an essential stop in Phnom Penh. Housed in a stunning terracotta building inspired by traditional temple architecture, the museum is a serene journey into the artistic soul of the Khmer Empire.
What to See
The Courtyard
The building itself is a masterpiece. The central garden courtyard features four lotus ponds and a statue of the "Leper King." It is one of the most peaceful spots in the chaotic city.
The King's Head
Don't miss the iconic stone head of King Jayavarman VII. His serene, meditative smile has become the symbol of Cambodia. Seeing the original up close is powerful.
The Reclining Vishnu
In the entrance hall lies a massive bronze fragment of a Reclining Vishnu. It was found at the West Mebon temple in Angkor and is the largest bronze statue ever discovered in Cambodia.
🗿 The "Leper King" Original
If you have visited the Terrace of the Leper King in Angkor Thom, you saw a replica statue. The original statue (Yama, the God of Death) is kept right here in the museum courtyard to protect it from the elements.
Enhance Your Visit
Since there are very few English signs inside, we highly recommend renting the Audio Guide ($5) or hiring a human guide at the entrance to fully appreciate the history.
