Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center
Phnom Tamao isn't just a zoo—it's Cambodia's largest wildlife sanctuary and rescue center. Home to over 1,200 animals, it is a vital place of healing for creatures rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Ratha and I visited recently, and here is how you can plan your own trip!
Takeo Province (Approx. 1 hour south of Phnom Penh)
Best by Private Car or Tuk-Tuk (The park is massive; you need a vehicle to move inside!)
Foreigners: $5 USD / Cambodians: ~1,000 Riel
Why You Should Visit
🐻 Free the Bears
Phnom Tamao houses the world's largest sanctuary for Sun Bears and Moon Bears. These bears were rescued from the bile trade and now live in large, natural forest enclosures.
🐘 Lucky the Elephant
Meet the famous resident elephants. Many of these gentle giants are being rehabilitated after years of hard labor or injuries from traps in the forest.
🐒 Playful Macaques
While most animals are in enclosures, the local monkeys roam free. Keep your food hidden, as they are very curious and fast!
🛡️ Conservation First
Your ticket price goes directly toward feeding and caring for these animals. It is a great way to support the Wildlife Alliance and their rescue missions.
📢 Rules for a Respectful Visit
Watching these animals interact is beautiful, but please remember: DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS.
Many of the animals are on strict medical diets. Human food (like chips or candy) can make them severely ill. Also, remember to take your trash back home with you—plastic is dangerous to wildlife!
How to Get There
Pro Tip: Combine your visit with a trip to Phnom Chisor temple nearby for a full day of Takeo adventure!
