A Guide to Battambang's Pre-Water Festival

What is the Pre-Water Festival?
Every year, before the massive national Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) in Phnom Penh, Battambang hosts its own spectacular celebration along the Sangker River. This "Pre-Water Festival" is not just a party—it's a thrilling qualifying round to select the province's best and fastest boat racing team to send to the capital to compete for the grand prize!
The festival is a time to give thanks to the rivers for the fertile land and abundant fish they provide. Its roots trace back to the 12th century, honoring the naval power of the Khmer Empire under King Jayavarman VII.
Festival Highlights: What to See & Do
Thrilling Boat Races
The main event! Teams from across the province race their long, beautifully decorated dragon boats in a fierce but friendly competition. The energy is incredible!
Markets & Exhibitions
The riverbanks come alive with a huge exhibition. Find everything from local products and delicious food to clothes, electronics, and services, often with special discounts.
Concerts & Amusements
As evening falls, live concerts take over, with many people enjoying the music and dancing. You'll also find amusement park rides and games for the kids.
Fireworks & Celebrations
After the races, the sky lights up with fireworks, and people release floating lanterns into the night sky, creating a magical atmosphere along the river.

The Cultural Heart of the Celebration
While the Battambang event is a local celebration, it shares its cultural soul with the national festival's three main ceremonies.
1. Ak Ambok (Eating Flattened Rice)
A special holiday dish where new-harvest rice is fried in the husk, pounded, and mixed with coconut and banana. You'll find it for sale everywhere during the festival.
2. Sampeah Preah Khae (Salutation to the Moon)
On the night of the full moon, people gather to give thanks to the moon, which is seen as a predictor of the coming harvest. It is a ceremony of prayer and gratitude.
3. Bandaet Pratip (Floating Illuminated Boats)
This is a spectacular evening parade where beautifully lit boats, often sponsored by government ministries and local businesses, float down the river, lighting up the waterway.
