Best Time to See

Early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 4 PM) when they are most active.

The beautiful province of Kratie in northeast Cambodia is home to one of the country's most precious natural treasures: the last remaining population of the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin. A visit here offers a rare chance to see these unique creatures in their natural habitat on the mighty Mekong River.

The Experience: A Boat Trip on the Mekong

A small wooden boat with tourists on the Mekong River, looking for dolphins.

Watching for the Ph'sout

The main viewing area is at the Kampi Dolphin Pool, a deep section of the river where the dolphins congregate. Here, you'll hire a local boatman who will expertly navigate you to the best spots.

Patience is key. The boatman will cut the engine, and you'll wait in silence, scanning the water's surface. The thrill comes from spotting their smooth, grey backs arching out of the water as they surface for air. They are shy, so seeing them is a truly special moment.

After the Tour: Souvenirs & Scenery

Once you return to shore, you can browse the many small stalls selling local handicrafts and souvenirs. Many items are carved from wood, often depicting the dolphins and other animals. It's a great way to support the local community and take home a memory of your visit.

Conservation is Key

The Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is critically endangered, with only a small number remaining in the Mekong. The fees from your boat trip directly support the local community and conservation efforts. By visiting responsibly, you are contributing to the protection of this rare and beautiful species for future generations.
