Cambodia's Water Festival: A Guide to the Siem Reap Celebration

Every November, Cambodia bursts into life with its most spectacular celebration: The Water Festival, or "Bon Om Touk". While the largest event traditionally takes place in Phnom Penh, the celebration in Siem Reap is a vibrant, exciting, and incredible experience, centered around the historic Siem Reap River.

Why Cambodia Celebrates

The festival marks three significant occasions:

🌊

The River's Reversal

It celebrates the natural wonder of the Tonle Sap River reversing its flow at the end of the monsoon season.

🌕

Thanksgiving

Held on the full moon of the Buddhist month of Kadeuk, it's a time to thank the Mekong River for providing fertile land and abundant fish.

Naval History

It commemorates the naval victories of the great Khmer King Jayavarman VII in the 12th century, with the boat races re-enacting these historic battles.

A Special Note on the 2015 Festival

This photo collection comes from the 2015 Water Festival in Siem Reap, which was a particularly special event. That year, the main celebration in Phnom Penh was canceled, leading many to travel to Siem Reap for the festivities. The result was an exceptionally large and energetic celebration that showcased the provinces' ability to host incredible national events.
