The Water Festival: Siem Reap's Biggest Party
Every November, Cambodia bursts into life with its most spectacular celebration: The Water Festival, or "Bon Om Touk". While the largest event traditionally takes place in Phnom Penh, the celebration in Siem Reap offers a more intimate yet equally vibrant experience along the historic Siem Reap River.
Why We Celebrate
The festival marks three significant occasions in Khmer culture:
Nature's Miracle
It celebrates the reversal of the Tonle Sap River's flow, a unique natural phenomenon that marks the end of the monsoon season.
Thanksgiving
Held on the full moon of the Buddhist month of Kadeuk, it is a time to thank the river spirits for providing fertile land and abundant fish.
Naval History
The boat races commemorate the naval victories of the great Khmer King Jayavarman VII in the 12th century, keeping the martial spirit alive.
A Note on these Photos (2015)
This photo collection comes from the 2015 Water Festival. That year was special because the main event in Phnom Penh was canceled due to low water levels. As a result, huge crowds flocked to Siem Reap, creating one of the most energetic and memorable celebrations in the province's history.
