Cambodia on the Line: An Epic Cross-Country Photography Mission

A team of Cambodian photographers on motorbikes preparing for their journey.

In 2015, a passionate group of Cambodian freelance photographers embarked on an ambitious and daring adventure named "Cambodia on the Line." Their mission was simple yet profound: to travel by motorbike along a straight line drawn across the map of Cambodia, capturing the raw, unfiltered moments of life in the Kingdom's most remote regions.

THE MISSION

To document the diverse lifestyles, cultures, and living conditions across seven provinces, from the Thai border in the west to the Vietnamese border in the east. The ultimate goal was to compile their incredible journey into a photography book, showcasing a side of Cambodia rarely seen.

The Route: A Straight Line Across the Kingdom

The journey traced the longest possible straight line within the country, starting from Kiri Sakor in Koh Kong province and heading northeast all the way to Kantui Neak in Ratanakiri province.

Provinces Crossed: Koh Kong → Kampong Speu → Kampong Chhnang → Kampong Thom → Kratie → Stung Treng → Ratanakiri

The Challenges of the Road

This was no simple road trip. The team faced immense difficulties, pushing their limits and their motorbikes through some of Cambodia's toughest terrains.

🌧️

Harsh Weather

The team battled through heavy rains and the constant risk of lightning strikes in wide-open spaces, making every day a gamble.

Dangerous Wildlife

Traveling through dense, remote jungles meant navigating terrain home to dangerous snakes and other wildlife, far from any medical help.

Tough Terrain

Thick, sticky mud frequently clogged their motorbikes, forcing them to stop constantly for exhausting manual clean-outs just to keep moving.

Limited Supplies

Despite packing tents, food, and medical supplies, the team faced the real threat of running out of food and water in areas with no villages or shops for miles.
