Just a short bicycle ride from the heart of Battambang lies Wat Kor, a village that feels like a step back in time. It is renowned for its collection of beautifully preserved traditional Khmer houses. The most famous of these is a true gem: a living museum where history is shared by the family who has always called it home.
A Living Museum
Meet the Guardian of History
What makes a visit here so special is the personal touch. The house was built in 1920 by a high-ranking official named Lok Oknha Nou Pinet Phoeung. Today, it is lovingly cared for by his granddaughter, Mrs. Bun Roeung.
Now in her 70s, she and her family welcome visitors personally. Mrs. Bun Roeung is a wonderful storyteller who speaks Khmer, English, and French, making the tour accessible to almost everyone.
Architecture & Atmosphere
The house is a stunning example of traditional Khmer architecture with French colonial influences, built entirely from sturdy local hardwoods like Koki wood. Unlike a sterile museum, this house feels lived-in.
As you walk through the open-air rooms, you can admire antique furniture, old family portraits, and intricate wood carvings. They also sell small handmade souvenirs like scarves and bracelets to help support the maintenance of the house.
