Banan Temple & The Bamboo Train: The Perfect Combo

A view of the ancient Banan Temple ruins.

Two Adventures, One Location!

Good news for travelers! The famous "Bamboo Train" has a new track located right at the base of Phnom Banan. You can now easily experience two of Battambang's top attractions in one perfect afternoon trip.

About 25 km south of Battambang city lies Phnom Banan, a centuries-old hilltop temple that has captivated locals for generations. Today, it offers a perfect blend of ancient history, physical challenge, and modern fun.

Part 1: The Ancient Climb

The steep stone staircase leading up to Banan Temple.

Challenge the 358 Steps

The journey to the top is a rewarding workout. A steep laterite staircase of 358 steps leads to the 11th-century temple towers. The climb is worth it for the breeze and the panoramic views of the Sangker River winding through the rice paddies below.

Pro Tip: Bring water! The climb is steep and humid. Take your time and use the fan-sellers' huts along the way to catch your breath.

Part 2: The Modern Ride

Tourists riding the Bamboo Train.

Ride the "Norry"

At the bottom of the mountain, the legendary Bamboo Train (Norry) awaits. The new track offers a scenic ride through the countryside. It is noisy, windy, and incredibly fun—a stark contrast to the quiet, ancient ruins you just explored.

Cost: Approx $5.00 USD per person.

Part 3: Relax & Recharge

The area at the base of the mountain is a popular picnic spot for locals.

A nearby pond is surrounded by small bamboo huts and hammocks. It is the perfect place to cool down with a fresh coconut, eat some roasted chicken, or take a nap before heading back to the city.

Sample Afternoon Itinerary

  • 3:00 PM: Arrive at Banan. Ride the Bamboo Train first while the sun is still high (the wind keeps you cool!).
  • 4:00 PM: Begin your climb up the 358 steps to Banan Temple. The late afternoon light is beautiful for photos.
  • 5:00 PM: Descend and relax in a hammock with a cold drink before your tuk-tuk ride home.
