Sangkran in Siem Reap: Celebrating Khmer New Year at Angkor
Every April, Cambodia bursts into celebration for Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey). While families gather at home, the public party happens in Siem Reap. The famous "Angkor Sankranta" transforms the temple complex into a massive, joyful festival ground celebrating culture, food, and community.
The Heart of the Celebration
For three days, the area around Angkor Wat and the Bayon becomes a pedestrian paradise. People from all 25 provinces flock here to watch cultural shows, play traditional games, and dance in the streets. It is loud, colorful, and incredibly energetic.
Traditional Games
This is the soul of Sankranta! Join the locals in classic games like Bos Angkunh (throwing seeds) and Leak Kanseng (hiding the towel). It's competitive fun for all ages.
The "Giant" Displays
Sankranta is famous for going BIG. In past years, they have broken Guinness World Records for the largest sticky rice cake and the biggest woven hat. Keep an eye out for massive art installations!
Food Village
A paradise for foodies. Explore the "Khmer Village" zone to taste regional specialties from across the Kingdom, from grilled sausages to ancient royal desserts.

🔥 Survival Tip: The Heat
My overall experience was awesome, but be warned: April is the hottest month of the year. Temperatures often hit 40°C (104°F). If you go, wear a hat, apply sunscreen, and drink double the water you think you need. The energy is incredible, but the heat is real!
Will You Join Next Year?
Khmer New Year usually falls on April 13th, 14th, and 15th. If you want to see Cambodia at its most vibrant and happy, start planning your trip now!
