For decades, watching the sunset from the summit of Phnom Bakheng has been a quintessential Angkor experience. This ancient temple-mountain, older than Angkor Wat itself, offers a breathtaking vantage point to see the sky ignite in color over the world's most famous temple. But getting that perfect view requires planning!
A Temple of Firsts
Built in the late 9th century by King Yasovarman I, Phnom Bakheng was the centerpiece of his new capital, Yasodharapura. It was the first major temple-mountain built in the Angkor area and served as the state temple for nearly two centuries. The pyramid-style temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and has five tiers, representing the five levels of Mount Meru.

The journey begins at the foot of Bakheng hill. You have two options: a steady 15-20 minute walk up a winding path, or for a unique experience, an elephant ride to the top (for a fee). Once at the temple base, you'll climb a steep set of wooden stairs to reach the top platform. From here, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree view. To the southeast, you can clearly see the iconic towers of Angkor Wat rising from the jungle, creating a truly unforgettable silhouette against the setting sun.
Tips for a Perfect Sunset View
- Arrive Early! This cannot be stressed enough. Due to the 300-person limit, you should aim to be at the base of the final stairs by 4:00 PM - 4:30 PM to secure a spot.
- Bring Your Angkor Pass. Officials will check your ticket at the bottom of the hill.
- Prepare for the Weather. It can still be very hot and sunny before the sun sets. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and water. After the rain, the air is clearer, offering better views.
- Be Patient on the Way Down. The path can be crowded and dark after sunset. Take your time and use your phone's flashlight if needed.
