Watching the sunset over the Angkorian jungle is a magical experience, and for decades, the temple-mountain of Phnom Bakheng has been the most famous place to do it. This 9th-century temple offers breathtaking views and a direct connection to the ancient history of the Khmer Empire.
The Original Center of the Universe
Before Angkor Wat, before Angkor Thom, there was Phnom Bakheng. Built in the late 9th century by King Yasovarman I, this was the state temple of the first city of Angkor. Its seven levels represent the seven heavens of Hinduism, and its location on a natural hill made it the perfect symbolic center of the new capital.

Part 1: The Climb
Your journey begins with a pleasant 15 to 20-minute walk up a wide, well-maintained path on the hillside. It's not too steep, making it accessible for most fitness levels. You can also opt for an elephant ride to the top, though walking is the more common choice.
Part 2: The Summit
At the top, you'll find the five-tiered pyramid temple. A steep wooden staircase takes you to the upper level, which is where everyone gathers for the main event. From here, you are rewarded with incredible 360-degree views.
Part 3: The Main Event
This is what everyone is here for. As the sun begins to dip, you can see the massive West Baray reservoir glistening in the distance and, on a clear day, the famous silhouette of Angkor Wat itself rising from the jungle. The sky explodes in color, creating a truly unforgettable memory.
Insider Tips for the Best Experience
- Arrive by 4:00 PM: This cannot be stressed enough. Due to the visitor cap, people are often turned away. Arrive early, secure your spot, and enjoy the views as the light changes.
- Check the Weather: The experience is best on a clear day. If it's very cloudy or hazy, you might consider the sunset at Pre Rup temple instead.
- Bring Your Angkor Pass: You will need to show your official Angkor Pass at the checkpoint at the base of the hill.
- Be Patient on the Way Down: It gets dark quickly after the sun sets. The path down can be crowded, so take your time and use your phone's flashlight if needed.
