No visit to Phnom Penh is complete without exploring the dazzling Royal Palace. Serving as the official residence of the King of Cambodia since the 1860s, this complex is a stunning example of classic Khmer architecture, featuring glittering golden spires and manicured tropical gardens.
Inside the Palace Walls
The Throne Hall
This is the most impressive building, used for coronations and meetings with foreign diplomats. While you cannot enter inside, the windows are usually open, allowing you to see the magnificent throne and ceiling frescos.
The Silver Pagoda
Named for its floor, which is covered in over 5,000 solid silver tiles. Inside sits the "Emerald Buddha" (made of crystal) and a life-sized gold Buddha encrusted with 9,584 diamonds.
The Moonlight Pavilion
You will see this open-air pavilion right from the street. It is used for classical Khmer dance performances and royal banquets. Its silhouette against the night sky is iconic.
Pro Tip: Go Early
The Palace gets very hot and crowded by 10:00 AM. We recommend arriving right when it opens at 8:00 AM to beat the tour buses and the heat.
