Phnom Krom: The Temple on the Hill
12 km Southwest of Siem Reap.
9th Century (King Yasovarman I).
Panoramic Sunset Views.
Rising dramatically from the flat Cambodian plains, Phnom Krom is a prominent hill that offers a captivating blend of ancient history and breathtaking natural beauty. Crowned by a 9th-century temple and overlooking the vast Tonle Sap Lake, it is a perfect destination for a half-day trip, especially for those seeking a spectacular sunset away from the Angkor crowds.
The Phnom Krom Experience
A visit to Phnom Krom is a journey in three parts: the climb, the temple, and the view.
The Hill
The journey begins with an ascent up the 140-meter-high hill. Unlike other temples, you can drive a motorbike or tuk-tuk almost all the way to the top via a paved road. It is a steep but easy journey compared to hiking!
The Temple
At the summit lies a sandstone temple dedicated to the Hindu trinity: Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Though the stone is heavily weathered by the wind, the three towers stand as a silent testament to the ancient Khmer Empire.
The View
This is the main reward. The 360-degree panorama is stunning. To the West, you see the immense ocean-like expanse of the Tonle Sap Lake. Watching the sun dip below the water here is magical.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Ticket Check: Phnom Krom is part of the Angkor Park. You MUST have a valid Angkor Pass to enter the temple area at the top. Don't forget it at your hotel!
- Lotus Stop: Before you head up the hill, stop at the base to see the massive lotus fields. They are often in bloom and make for incredible photos.
- Best Time: Arrive around 4:30 PM. This gives you time to explore the temple ruins before settling in a good spot for sunset at 5:30-6:00 PM.
