Srah Srang: The Royal Bathing Pool
The Best Sunrise Alternative to Angkor Wat
Directly opposite Banteay Kdei temple.
Sunrise (Not Sunset!).
Jayavarman VII (12th Century).
While thousands of tourists flock to Angkor Wat for sunrise, one of the most serene experiences can be found at Srah Srang. Known as "The Royal Bath," this massive reservoir offers a mirror-like reflection of the rising sun without the pushy crowds.
What You Will See
The Viewing Platform
The western edge features a stunning multi-tiered laterite platform adorned with Guardian Lions and Naga balustrades. This is where the King would have boarded his boat. Today, it is the perfect spot to set up your tripod or sit with a coffee.
The Ancient Island
The reservoir measures 700 by 350 meters. In the center, there was once a small temple on an artificial island. In the Dry Season (March-May), the water level drops enough that you can walk out to see the stone remains. In the wet season, only the trees poke out of the water.
Expert Tips for the Morning
How to Plan
- Timing: Arrive at 5:30 AM. The platform faces East, so you get a direct view of the sun rising over the water.
- Local Coffee: Local vendors set up small stalls right next to the lions early in the morning. Enjoying a hot Cambodian coffee while the sky turns pink is pure magic.
- The Perfect Combo: Srah Srang is located directly across the road from Banteay Kdei. Watch the sunrise here, then walk across the street to explore Banteay Kdei before the tour buses arrive.
