The O'Smach Border Crossing
Casinos, Markets & Hidden Temples
What is O'Smach?
O'Smach is an international border checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province, connecting Cambodia with Thailand's Surin province. Because gambling is illegal in Thailand, O'Smach has transformed into a neon-lit casino strip catering almost exclusively to Thai day-trippers. However, as the video shows, there is more to explore here than just the card tables.
Highlights of the Trip
The Casino Strip
The skyline is dominated by the O'Smach Resort. Even if you don't gamble, walking through the grand golden archways in such a remote jungle location is a surreal experience.
The Border Gate
You can walk right up to the international checkpoint. It is a busy trade route, and the surrounding market is a great place to find Thai goods and snacks.
The Road Trip
The journey from Siem Reap takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The roads are now paved and smooth, offering beautiful views as you ascend the Dangrek Mountains.
🛕 Video Highlight: Prasat Lberk
As seen in the video, just a short distance from the border (in Samraong city) lies Prasat Lberk (also spelled Lbeuk). It is an ancient laterite temple ruin that is rarely visited by tourists. It makes for a perfect cultural stop to balance out the modern casinos.
