- For Road Trippers: A perfect stop on the way to the Pailin border.
Deep in Battambang's Phnom Proek district, near the Thai border, lies a natural phenomenon that feels completely un-Cambodian. Phnom Habei (nicknamed Mountain 53) has become famous for its spectacular "Sea of Clouds" that rolls in at dawn, making you feel like you are standing on an island in the sky.
The Mountain 53 Experience
The Cloud Phenomenon
Because of the unique valley geography and humidity, a thick blanket of fog often forms at dawn. The best time to see this is the Rainy Season (June–Oct) or cool mornings in November.
Glamping & Camping
Don't have gear? No problem. Local entrepreneurs now offer tent rentals and basic wooden cabins. You can sleep in a pre-set tent for a very small fee (~$10–$15).
Sunrise Breakfast
There is nothing quite like sipping hot Khmer coffee while watching the sun pierce through the clouds. Small local stalls sell noodles and coffee right at the viewpoint.
📝 Insider Planner's Tips
1. Why the name "53"? It is named after Border Post 53. You are literally a stone's throw from Thailand here!
2. Getting There: It is a long haul. About 130km (2.5 - 3 hours) from Battambang Town. Follow National Road 57. The road is paved and beautiful.
3. Packing: Even if the city is hot, the mountain gets cold at 5 AM. Bring a light jacket or hoodie. You will thank us later!
4. Timing: You MUST be at the viewpoint by 5:30 AM. The clouds usually dissipate by 8:00 AM once the sun gets strong.
Ready for a Real Road Trip?
Phnom Habei is best visited as an overnight trip. Rent a motorbike in Battambang and head west for a weekend you will never forget.
