Wat Tipkaram: Adventure in the Peam Bang Flooded Forest
Is This Adventure For You?
- For Explorers: This is a deep-lake mission. Expect raw, unpolished travel far from the city.
- For Nature Lovers: Boat through treetops in a surreal, flooded landscape.
- For Culture Seekers: See the 10-meter high stilted homes of the Peam Bang floating commune.
Located in the remote Peam Bang commune of Kampong Thom province, Wat Tipkaram is one of the most unique pagodas in Cambodia. Reaching it is a half-day water expedition across the Great Tonle Sap Lake, passing through ancient flooded forests and villages that live entirely according to the rising and falling tides.
The Journey is the Destination
Flooded Forest
In the wet season, the forest is completely submerged. You will boat directly over the canopy of trees. It is silent, magical, and feels like another planet.
The Island Pagoda
Wat Tipkaram stands as a golden beacon in the middle of the wetlands. Recently renovated, its bright colors reflect beautifully off the calm lake waters.
Giant Stilts
You will pass the villages of Peam Bang, where houses are built on bamboo stilts up to 10 meters high to survive the massive seasonal floodwaters.
⚓ Practical Explorer Tips
Seasonality: This trip is best in the Wet Season (July–Nov). In the dry season, the water recedes for kilometers, and you may have to walk or take a motorbike across the dusty lakebed to reach the temple!
Logistics: Drive from Kampong Thom town to the Stoung district boat launch. You will need to hire a private wooden boat (~$20–$40 depending on your group size and duration).
What to Bring: A raincoat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. There are very few shops once you head out onto the open water.
Explore the Real Tonle Sap
Wat Tipkaram offers a glimpse of the lake that 99% of tourists never see. It is a powerful reminder of the resilience and beauty of life on the water.
