Preah Khan of Kampong Svay (Prasat Bakan)
Cambodia's Largest and Most Remote Temple Complex
Is This Adventure For You?
- You want a 100% "Indiana Jones" vibe.
- You have a full day and a sturdy 4WD/dirt bike.
- You want paved roads and crowds.
- You are sensitive to heat and long drives.
Hidden deep in the forests of Preah Vihear province lies a true archaeological giant: Prasat Preah Khan of Kampong Svay. At over 25 square kilometers, it is the largest temple enclosure ever built by the Khmer Empire—even larger than Angkor Thom!
Why It Matters
The King's Hideout
This was the secret base for King Jayavarman VII. While Angkor was occupied by the Cham, he used this remote city to train his army before marching out to reclaim the throne.
Artistic Origin
This temple is the source of Cambodia’s most iconic art. The famous Kneeling Jayavarman VII statue found in the National Museum was discovered right here.
The Lost City
Unlike Angkor, most of this site is unrestored. You will see massive trees strangling ancient stone gateways and crumbling face-towers hidden in the thick brush.
🧠Explorer's Pro-Tip
The complex is divided into several groups. Don't miss Prasat Preah Stung, famous for its Bayon-style face tower standing over a small stream. It is one of the most photogenic spots in the entire country.
Getting There (Road Update 2026)
Reaching Bakan has become easier, but it remains a mission. It is roughly 100km east of Siem Reap.
- The Road: The main road from Siem Reap (via Highway 64) is now mostly paved. However, the final 10-15km leading into Ta Seng Village can be rough, sandy, or muddy.
- Vehicle: In the dry season, a standard car can make it if you are careful. In the wet season, a High-Clearance 4WD or Dirt Bike is absolutely mandatory.
- Tickets: Currently, entry is Free. There is no official ticket booth, just the silence of the forest.
"For those who find Angkor too crowded, Preah Khan of Kampong Svay is the reward for your curiosity."
