Phnom Kulen is more than just a waterfall; it is the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. It was here in 802 AD that King Jayavarman II declared himself a 'God King,' marking the beginning of the Angkor era. Today, it is a refreshing mix of nature, history, and spiritual energy.
The Big Three Sites
1. The Waterfall
The main drop is a massive 20-meter cascade. The pool at the bottom is safe for swimming. Pro Tip: Don't be surprised if small fish nibble on your feet—it's a free natural fish spa!
2. 1,000 Lingas
Look into the riverbed to see hundreds of lingas (phallic symbols of Shiva) carved into the sandstone. The ancient Khmers believed these carvings sanctified the water before it reached Angkor.
3. The Reclining Buddha
Visit Preah Ang Thom, a temple built into a massive boulder. Inside, you'll find a giant 16th-century reclining Buddha carved from the rock itself. Remember to take your shoes off!
Plan Your Adventure
Kulen is best visited as a full-day trip. You can stop at Banteay Srei (The Pink Temple) on the way back to make the most of your car rental.
