Phnom Da: Where Cambodia Began
Long before Angkor Wat rose from the jungle, the Kingdom of Funan ruled the Mekong Delta. Phnom Da is one of the last surviving monuments of that mysterious era. Perched on a solitary hill in Takeo, it offers a rare glimpse into the 6th century.

Two Temples, One Hill
1. Asram Moha Russei
Halfway up the hill lies a tiny, windowless stone hut. This is actually a temple! Built from laterite, it is completely unique in Khmer architecture. Its name means "The Hermit's Dwelling," and stepping inside its cool, dark interior feels like entering a time capsule.
2. Prasat Phnom Da
At the very summit stands the main 6th-century temple. Although parts were renovated in the 11th century, the core structure is pre-Angkorian. From here, you have a 360-degree view of the flat floodplains that stretch all the way to Vietnam.
💡 The "Water World" Adventure
In the dry season, you can drive a car straight to the hill. BUT, the real magic happens in the Wet Season (Sept-Nov). The entire landscape floods, turning Phnom Da into an island.
Pro Tip: Hire a speedboat from the Takeo riverfront ($25-$35 return). You will speed through ancient canals (some built 1,500 years ago!) to reach the museum at Angkor Borei and then Phnom Da. It is an unforgettable journey.
