The Cardamom Mountains: The Green Frontier
Welcome to the "Green Lungs" of Southeast Asia. For decades, the Cardamom Mountains were a forbidden zone. Today, they are Cambodia's premier destination for eco-tourism, offering a chance to trek through virgin rainforest, swim in hidden waterfalls, and spot rare wildlife.
Choose Your Adventure Level
The region is vast. To avoid getting lost (literally and figuratively), choose the base camp that fits your style:
1. Chi Phat
The best organized community-based tourism site in Cambodia. Stay in homestays, rent mountain bikes, and take guided day-hikes to waterfalls. It's safe, accessible, and supports the local community directly.
2. Areng Valley
For those who want culture with their nature. Located deep in the mountains, this area is home to the indigenous Chong people and the rare Siamese Crocodile. Expect basic amenities and stunning spiritual scenery.
3. Phnom Aural
At 1,813 meters, this is the highest point in Cambodia. It is not a casual walk. The trek takes 2-3 days, requires a ranger guide, and involves steep climbs through bamboo forests. The view from the top is your reward.
⚠️ Jungle Survival 101
- The Leech Factor: If you visit during the rainy season (May-Oct), leeches are everywhere. You must wear "Leech Socks" (canvas over-socks). Guides usually rent them out—do not refuse them!
- Cash is King: There are NO ATMs in these villages. Bring small bills (Riel and USD) to cover your meals, guides, and transport for the entire stay.
- Disconnect: WiFi is rare and electricity often runs on generators from 6 PM to 10 PM. Bring a power bank and a headlamp.
💡 How to Get to Chi Phat
Take any bus from Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville heading to Koh Kong. Ask the driver to drop you at Andoung Teuk Bridge (approx. 3-4 hours from Phnom Penh). From the bridge, you take a scenic 2-hour boat ride up the Piphot River to reach the village. It's an adventure just getting there!
