Sunset on the Mekong: The Chaktomuk River Cruise
Sisowath Quay (Riverside), Phnom Penh.
Board at 5:00 PM for the sunset.
$5.00 USD (Shared boat, usually includes 1 drink).
One of the most relaxing experiences in Cambodia's bustling capital is a sunset cruise on the Chaktomuk River. Known as the "Four Faces," this is the unique meeting point where four major waterways converge: the Upper Mekong, Lower Mekong, Bassac, and Tonle Sap. It is the perfect way to see the city light up for the evening.
Golden Hour Views
Drifting along the water gives you a front-row seat to the city's contrasts.
The Royal Palace
Get a stunning, unobstructed view of the glittering golden roofs of the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. It glows beautifully in the late afternoon sun.
The Skyline
Watch the modern skyscrapers of Phnom Penh, like the Vattanac Capital Tower, light up as day turns to night, reflecting on the water.
Floating Villages
On the opposite bank (Chroy Changvar), you will see traditional fishing boats and floating homes, offering a glimpse into the local riverside life.
Tips for the Perfect Cruise
- Don't Book Online: You don't need to book in advance. Simply walk along the riverside (Sisowath Quay) near the Royal Palace around 4:30 PM. There are dozens of boats waiting.
- Negotiate for Private: If you are a group of 4 or more, you can often hire a whole small boat for $15-$20 total. It's much nicer than sharing!
- Bring a Jacket: It can get surprisingly breezy on the water once the sun goes down.
