Prasat Preah Vihear: The Temple in the Clouds
3.5 - 4 hours from Siem Reap (One Way).
Required for the ticket office near the border.
$10 Entry + $25 Truck (The truck takes you up the final cliff).
Private cars cannot go to the top. You must park at the base and rent a 4x4 pickup truck (seats 6) or a motorbike taxi to climb the insanely steep road.
Perched atop a 525-meter cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, Prasat Preah Vihear is Cambodia's most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site. It offers a unique combination of adrenaline (the ride up), history, and the best view in the country.
The Experience
The Orientation
Unlike Angkor Wat which faces West, or most temples which face East, Preah Vihear faces North. It was built to face the Khmer Empire's territories in what is now Thailand.
The Gopuras
You don't just "enter" this temple; you ascend it. You walk through a series of 5 magnificent pavilions (Gopuras), climbing higher and higher until you reach the sanctuary at the cliff's edge.
Pei Ta Di (The Cliff)
Walk behind the final sanctuary to find Pei Ta Di. This is the sheer cliff drop with a 180-degree view of the Cambodian plains. It is breathtaking.
Plan Your Trip
Because of the distance, we recommend hiring a private taxi for the day. You can stop at Koh Ker or Anlong Veng on the way back to break up the drive.
