Ta Prohm: Nature’s Masterpiece
The Iconic "Tomb Raider" Temple of Angkor
Built: 1186 AD
By: Jayavarman VII
Film: Tomb Raider (2001)
Pass: Angkor Pass Required
Ta Prohm is unlike any other temple in Angkor. While sites like Angkor Wat were painstakingly restored, Ta Prohm was left in its "natural state"—a stunning, crumbling ruin gripped by the massive, snake-like roots of silk-cotton and strangler fig trees. It is a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the power of nature over man-made history.
Hidden Secrets of Ta Prohm
Beyond the famous "Tomb Raider Tree," there are three things most visitors miss:
- The Echo Room: Located in a small side-chamber, stand against the wall and thump your chest. If you are "pure of heart" (according to legend), the room will echo with a loud, hollow thud. It only works if you hit your chest, not the walls!
- The Stegosaurus: Look closely at the corner of one of the central courtyards. There is a small stone carving that looks remarkably like a dinosaur. It has fueled decades of "Ancient Alien" theories.
- The Hidden Face: Tucked inside the roots of one of the giant trees is a small stone face peering out. Finding it is a favorite challenge for local guides.
💡 How to Beat the Crowds
Ta Prohm is extremely busy between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. To get photos without hundreds of people in them, enter through the East Gate at exactly 7:30 AM or visit at 4:30 PM just before the park closes. The shadows at sunset make the trees look even more eerie and beautiful.
Visitor Logistics (2026 Update)
To protect the roots and the stone, the Apsara Authority has installed extensive wooden walkways throughout the temple. Please stay on these paths. Climbing on the roots is strictly forbidden and can result in a fine.
Tickets: Your 1-day ($37), 3-day ($62), or 7-day ($72) Angkor Pass is required. Make sure you have your physical or digital pass ready to show at the entrance.
Pro Tip: Ta Prohm is part of the "Small Circuit." Combine it with Bayon and Ta Keo for the perfect full-day itinerary.
