Phnom Chiso: The Temple of the Sun King
Rising 133 meters above the flat plains of Takeo province, Phnom Chiso is a site of incredible historical power. Built long before Angkor Wat reached its peak, this hilltop sanctuary offers a perfect blend of ancient ruins, active Buddhism, and the best panoramic views in southern Cambodia.

Climbing Through History
To reach the summit, you must conquer the grand southern staircase. As you climb the **412 steps**, take a moment to look back. On clear days, you can see the perfect alignment of the ancient temple with the two smaller "transit" temples and the sacred baray (reservoir) far below on the plain.
The Ancient Prasat
The main attraction is the 11th-century sandstone temple. Look closely at the lintels and pediments; the carvings of Shiva and Vishnu are remarkably detailed. The dark, weathered stone creates a somber, majestic atmosphere that feels much older than the temples in Siem Reap.
The Modern Pagoda
Sharing the hilltop is a beautiful modern pagoda. Monks still live and pray here, continuing a spiritual tradition that has lasted for a thousand years. The contrast between the ancient grey stone and the bright colors of the new temple is stunning.
💡 Expert Pro-Tip
If you are driving from Phnom Penh, make it a Full Day Circuit. Stop at Tonle Bati (Ta Prohm temple) and the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center on your way back. They are all on the same route (National Road 2), making for the perfect "Southside Day Trip."
