Roka Chonleung Temple
A Brick Masterpiece Hidden in Kandal
Most travelers rush past Kandal province on their way to Siem Reap, but they are missing out on hidden treasures like Roka Chonleung. Tucked away in a quiet village, this temple offers a rare, peaceful connection to Cambodia's Pre-Angkorian past, completely free of crowds.

Why It's Special
Unlike the massive grey sandstone blocks of Angkor Wat, Roka Chonleung is built from red clay bricks. This style dates back to the 10th century (possibly the reign of King Rajendravarman II). Despite its age, if you look closely at the lintels and doorways, you can still see incredibly detailed carvings of Hindu deities that have survived for over 1,000 years.
The temple sits peacefully next to a modern, active pagoda. This contrast between the ancient crumbling brick and the bright, gold-painted modern temple is a beautiful symbol of how Cambodian culture honors its history while living in the present.
💡 The "Mekong Loop" Day Trip
Don't just drive there and back! Turn this into a loop:
1. Take the Arey Ksat Ferry from Phnom Penh across the Mekong.
2. Drive north to Vihear Suor to see the Buffalo Racing grounds.
3. Continue to Roka Chonleung for sunset.
4. Cross back via the Prek Tamak Bridge for a scenic drive home.
Your Visit Planner
- Getting There: The roads are paved and in good condition. It is an easy trip for a motorbike or a rented Tuk-Tuk for the afternoon.
- Golden Hour: Arrive around 4:30 PM. The setting sun hits the red bricks, making them glow a brilliant orange—perfect for photography.
- Respect: Because it shares grounds with an active pagoda, please dress respectfully (cover shoulders and knees).
