Baset Temple: Battambang's Forgotten Sanctuary

The ruins of Baset Temple.

The quiet, leaning tower of Prasat Baset.

While tourists flock to Banan and Ek Phnom, Baset Temple (Prasat Baset) sits quietly on a hill 15km from town. Built in the 11th century by King Suryavarman I, this temple offers a rare, private glimpse into the Angkorian era without the crowds.

Why You Should Visit

🏛️

The Leaning Tower

The main sandstone sanctuary has shifted over the centuries and now leans slightly to the side. It creates a distinctive silhouette against the sky.

💧

The Magic Pond

To the east lies an ancient pond (Srah Teuk). Locals believe this water never dries up, even in the hottest months of the dry season.

🖼️

The Lintel Carvings

Look closely above the doorways. The carvings of Shiva and Vishnu are remarkably well-preserved, showcasing the intricate skill of 11th-century artisans.

The Legend: Folklore says that if you make a wish and throw a coconut into the pond, it will come true... but only if the coconut floats back to the surface immediately.

💡 Combine Your Trip

Baset Temple is on the same side of the river as Wat Ek Phnom. You can easily visit both in a single morning. Start at Baset for the hill views, then head to Ek Phnom for the giant Buddha statue.
