Cambodia's Only Winery: The Banan Grape Farm
15km South of Battambang (Near Banan Temple).
Yes, the ONLY vineyard in the country!
Free entry. $2-$5 for tastings.
Did you know Cambodia has a winery? Tucked away in the countryside near Banan Temple is the Prasat Phnom Banan Winery. Growing grapes in the tropics is incredibly difficult, but this family-run farm has managed to do it for over a decade. It is a quirky, fun, and totally unexpected stop on your Battambang itinerary.
The Experience
The Walk
The main attraction is simply walking under the hanging vines. It is surprisingly photogenic and feels like a little slice of Italy in the middle of Southeast Asia.
The Tasting
Take a seat at the bar for a tasting flight. You can try their Red Wine (Black Queen variety), their strong Brandy, and their non-alcoholic Grape Juice.
Harvest Warning
The vines produce fruit 2-3 times a year, but they are also pruned back heavily. Check recent reviews! If you visit right after pruning, you might just see sticks instead of leaves.
🍷 The Honest Taste Test
Let's be real: growing wine grapes in 35°C heat affects the flavor. The red wine here is often described as syrupy and medicinal, more like port than a Cabernet. It is definitely an "acquired taste"! However, the Grape Juice and Ginger Juice are consistently delicious and refreshing.
The Perfect Combo
The winery is small (30 mins max). Combine it with a trip to the nearby Bamboo Train and Phnom Banan Temple for a full day out.
